Istanbul Airport (IST) is huge and a long way from the old city. On your own, you need about 7 hours to see the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia; a tour that handles the transport makes 6 hours work. With 8 hours or more, add the Spice Bazaar and a ferry on the Bosphorus.

Short answer
Yes, if your passport is visa-free for Türkiye: US, Canada, UK, most of the EU and, since April 2026, Australia. On your own, allow about 7 hours, as the metro to the old city takes 60 to 80 minutes. With 6 hours, take a paid tour with airport pickup, or Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour if your ticket qualifies and a tour starts soon after you land (mostly outside views since May 2026). Indian passports need a visa.
Is an Istanbul layover worth leaving the airport for?
Yes, if you have the hours. Istanbul Airport (IST) sits far out on the European side, near the Black Sea coast, and the historic peninsula around Sultanahmet is about an hour or more away. That makes Istanbul a harder escape than Doha.
Three things decide it: your passport, your hours and your ticket.
- Visa-free passports: US, Canada, UK, most of the EU and Schengen, and since April 2026 Australia, can enter for up to 90 days in any 180. See visa and transit rules for other passports, including India.
- Time: on your own, plan on 7 hours or more between flights. Getting off the plane and through passport control takes about 45 minutes, and the metro and tram take 60 to 80 minutes each way. Be back at the airport 90 minutes before you fly, which is enough if you already hold your onward boarding pass and have no bag to check. Turkish Airlines’ own Touristanbul tours bring passengers back 1 hour 25 minutes before departure.
- Ticket: if both flights are on one Turkish Airlines booking, with a 6 to 24-hour international connection, the free Touristanbul tour takes care of transport, a guide and a meal.
Touristanbul in 2026: still free, but changed
Touristanbul is still running and still free for eligible Turkish Airlines passengers, but it isn’t the tour older guides describe.
- Since 1 May 2026, the 08:00 to 11:30 morning tour is a panoramic drive. You stay on the vehicle and don’t go into any museum.
- The evening tour sees Hagia Sophia from outside only.
- The Bosphorus evening cruise tour ran only from April to October, and isn’t offered from 1 November 2026.
If going inside Hagia Sophia matters to you, a paid layover tour (opens in a new tab) with airport pickup and entry tickets does that. Our itineraries compare the options and the layover each one needs.
The simplest plan on your own
- Clear passport control and follow the Metro signs from the arrivals level.
- Take the M11 to Gayrettepe, change to the M2 towards Yenikapı and ride to Vezneciler, then hop on the T1 tram to Sultanahmet.
- See the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia gallery and the Basilica Cistern, all a few minutes’ walk apart.
- Walk or tram down to Eminönü for the Spice Bazaar and a ferry across the water, then head back the same way.

Our 6, 8, 12 and 24-hour itineraries fill in the detail, and getting into the city covers the Havaist bus, taxis, private transfers and how long the trip back through the airport takes, including Fast Track and the live queue screens.
Watch the calendar
- Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, and the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. The Spice Bazaar opens every day.
- Fridays: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque close to visitors around midday prayers, roughly 12:00 to 14:30.
- Prayer times: mosques pause visits briefly five times a day, so build a little slack into a mosque visit.
- Winter: from December to February expect highs of about 10°C and frequent rain.
Staying in the airport instead
With a short layover, or a passport that needs a visa you don’t have, IST is a decent place to wait. You can sleep without passing passport control in a YOTELAIR cabin (4 hours minimum) or an iGA Sleepod paid by the hour. There’s also a 24-hour pay-at-the-door lounge with showers, and a museum of Turkish treasures on the international departures floor. See at the airport for options and prices.
Long connections on Turkish Airlines
Two free-hotel schemes are worth checking before you pay for a room:
- Transit hotel: Economy connections of 12 hours or more, or 9 hours in Business, when no shorter connection exists on your route. Ask at the Hotel Desk in arrivals.
- Stopover: 20 hours to 7 days on a round trip, applied for at least 72 hours ahead.
Both mean entering Türkiye. The details are in visa and transit rules.
